Gender in Sociolinguistics perspective
Gender
1. Gender
In this paper the writer uses the word gender rather than sex because
sex has come to refer to categories distinguished by biological
characteristics, while gender is more appropriate for distinguishing people
on the basis of their socio-cultural behavior, including speech (Holmes,
Jonet, 2000:150). Also gender is a social construction, influenced by
sociohistorical criteria and cultural conditioning (Paviston, Cristina Barkt,
2003:199). So gender has carried many kinds of culture from community
to communities include spoken language.

2. Gender in Sociolinguistics perspective
Generally gender is embedded so thoroughly in institutions,
actions, beliefs and desires (Conell, 2003:9). However in this paper, the
definition of gender from sociolinguistics view is the distinction
language features used by males and females based on the socio-
cultural behavior, including speech. Since a long time ago gender has
taken an important role to create language features. Gender has
appeared as a major issue in communication which is still in debating. It
creates styles and features of language between male and female.
Moreover, it gives contribution on sociolinguistics especially in the
explanation of vocabulary innovation, pronunciation, grammar and
communication styles.
Therefore it sometimes creates miscommunication. Gender in
sociolinguistics can cause different communicative competence. Above
it was mentioned that gender has brought differences in language
features. It happens in both of males and females. Research shows if
men had power over language to define meaning and they showed their
power in the language they used during interactions (Weatherall, Ann,
2002:5). It means gender has taken big role to show power. In the same
way, gender has connection with language. Then language is imbued
with power (Weatherall, Ann, 2002:6).
3. Connection between Language and Gender
Sometimes people will not realize that there is connection
between gender and language. Gender is not only used to distinguish
people based on dress or performance but also their language. It has
brought different language styles. In many contexts, gender creates
differences in language. Moreover, the specific language features that
vary between women and men are not the same across context
(Weatherall, Ann, 2007:186). This case might happen because by
considering the using of language, people will get equality of gender. In
fact, it is assumed that gender for women have low social status than
men. Gender really influence towards language features that is spoken
by men and women. Moreover language is both a medium for
expressing gender identity and a reflection of that identity (Weatherall,
Ann, 2002:123)
